Evaluate your liver health with a comprehensive panel of enzymes, proteins, and bilirubin. Essential for detecting liver disease, medication effects, and jaundice.
The Liver Function Test (LFT) β also called a Liver Panel or Hepatic Function Panel β is a group of blood tests that assess the health and function of your liver. The liver is your body's largest internal organ and performs over 500 vital functions including protein synthesis, toxin filtration, bile production, glycogen storage, and hormone metabolism.
The LFT measures various enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT), proteins (Albumin, Total Protein, Globulin), and bilirubin levels. Abnormal values can indicate liver inflammation, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallbladder problems, or the effects of alcohol and medications on the liver. Given rising rates of fatty liver disease in India (estimated to affect 1 in 3 urban adults), regular LFT screening is increasingly important.
| Parameter | Normal Range | What It Indicates |
|---|---|---|
| ALT (SGPT) | 7β56 U/L | Liver cell damage; most specific for liver |
| AST (SGOT) | 10β40 U/L | Liver/muscle damage; elevated in hepatitis |
| ALP | 44β147 U/L | Bile duct and bone disease |
| GGT | 8β61 U/L | Alcohol liver disease; bile duct issues |
| Total Bilirubin | 0.2β1.2 mg/dL | Jaundice indicator; bile processing |
| Direct Bilirubin | 0.0β0.3 mg/dL | Obstructive jaundice |
| Total Protein | 6.0β8.3 g/dL | Liver's protein synthesis capacity |
| Albumin | 3.5β5.0 g/dL | Long-term liver function; nutritional status |
| Globulin | 2.0β3.5 g/dL | Immune proteins |
| A/G Ratio | 1.1β2.5 | Liver disease pattern indicator |
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now the most common liver condition worldwide and affects an estimated 30β40% of urban Indians. It occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells, even in people who don't drink alcohol. It's strongly linked to obesity, diabetes, high triglycerides, and metabolic syndrome. In early stages it has no symptoms β an LFT (often with abdominal ultrasound) is the only way to detect it. Most cases are reversible with diet and exercise.
