What is a Liver Function Test?

The Liver Function Test (LFT) β€” also called a Liver Panel or Hepatic Function Panel β€” is a group of blood tests that assess the health and function of your liver. The liver is your body's largest internal organ and performs over 500 vital functions including protein synthesis, toxin filtration, bile production, glycogen storage, and hormone metabolism.

The LFT measures various enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP, GGT), proteins (Albumin, Total Protein, Globulin), and bilirubin levels. Abnormal values can indicate liver inflammation, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallbladder problems, or the effects of alcohol and medications on the liver. Given rising rates of fatty liver disease in India (estimated to affect 1 in 3 urban adults), regular LFT screening is increasingly important.

LFT Parameters & Normal Ranges

ParameterNormal RangeWhat It Indicates
ALT (SGPT)7–56 U/LLiver cell damage; most specific for liver
AST (SGOT)10–40 U/LLiver/muscle damage; elevated in hepatitis
ALP44–147 U/LBile duct and bone disease
GGT8–61 U/LAlcohol liver disease; bile duct issues
Total Bilirubin0.2–1.2 mg/dLJaundice indicator; bile processing
Direct Bilirubin0.0–0.3 mg/dLObstructive jaundice
Total Protein6.0–8.3 g/dLLiver's protein synthesis capacity
Albumin3.5–5.0 g/dLLong-term liver function; nutritional status
Globulin2.0–3.5 g/dLImmune proteins
A/G Ratio1.1–2.5Liver disease pattern indicator

When Should You Get an LFT?

🟑Jaundice β€” yellow discoloration of skin or eyes
🟀Dark yellow or brown urine, pale/clay-colored stools
🀒Nausea, vomiting, or persistent abdominal pain
βš–οΈLoss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
😴Fatigue, weakness, and general malaise
🍺Regular alcohol consumption (monitoring liver health)
πŸ’ŠLong-term use of medications (statins, antibiotics, NSAIDs)
🦠Known hepatitis B or C β€” monitoring liver function
🫁 What is Fatty Liver Disease?

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now the most common liver condition worldwide and affects an estimated 30–40% of urban Indians. It occurs when excess fat accumulates in liver cells, even in people who don't drink alcohol. It's strongly linked to obesity, diabetes, high triglycerides, and metabolic syndrome. In early stages it has no symptoms β€” an LFT (often with abdominal ultrasound) is the only way to detect it. Most cases are reversible with diet and exercise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does high SGPT (ALT) mean?+
Elevated SGPT (ALT) is the most specific indicator of liver cell damage. Mild elevation (up to 3Γ— normal) can result from fatty liver, alcohol, medications, or strenuous exercise. Significant elevation suggests active liver inflammation β€” possibly from viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, or autoimmune liver disease. Always confirm with your doctor and additional tests if elevated.
Is fasting required for LFT?+
An 8–10 hour fast is recommended for most accurate results, as eating β€” especially fatty meals β€” can temporarily affect bilirubin and some enzyme levels. Water and regular medications are allowed. Book an early morning slot for convenience.
Can LFT detect hepatitis?+
LFT can indicate liver inflammation consistent with hepatitis by showing elevated liver enzymes (ALT, AST). However, to confirm hepatitis and identify the specific type (A, B, C), specific viral marker tests (HBsAg, Anti-HCV, Hepatitis A IgM) are needed. LFT is the starting point β€” specific tests follow if enzymes are elevated.
Can alcohol damage show on LFT?+
Yes β€” alcohol-induced liver damage typically shows as elevated GGT (often the earliest marker), followed by elevated AST and ALT. An AST:ALT ratio above 2:1 in a heavy drinker is strongly suggestive of alcoholic liver disease. GGT also rises with cholestasis and certain medications.
Is home collection available for LFT?+
Yes. We recommend scheduling early morning home collection (7–9 AM) so you can have your overnight fast completed at home and the sample collected before breakfast. Call or WhatsApp +91-9021491236 to book a slot.
