KFT – Kidney Function Test

Comprehensive kidney health assessment including creatinine, urea, uric acid, and electrolytes. Early detection of CKD, kidney stones, and renal disorders.

What is a KFT Test?

A Kidney Function Test (KFT), also known as Renal Function Test (RFT), is a panel of blood and urine tests that evaluate how well your kidneys are filtering waste products, regulating electrolytes, and maintaining fluid balance. The kidneys filter approximately 200 litres of blood daily β€” and their failure can be silent until very late stages.

India has one of the highest burdens of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in the world, with an estimated 17% of adults affected. The dangerous reality is that CKD often has no symptoms until 60–70% of kidney function is already lost. Regular KFT testing is the most effective strategy for early detection and intervention.

πŸ”΄ Silent Killer: Why KFT is Critical

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often causes no symptoms in early stages. By the time symptoms like swelling, fatigue, or reduced urination appear, significant kidney damage may have already occurred. Annual KFT testing β€” especially for diabetics, hypertensives, and those over 40 β€” is essential for early detection and prevention.

KFT Parameters & Normal Ranges

Parameter Normal Range What It Indicates
Serum CreatinineM: 0.7–1.3 mg/dL  |  F: 0.5–1.1 mg/dLPrimary kidney filtration marker
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)7–20 mg/dLProtein waste β€” elevated in kidney disease
Urea15–40 mg/dLKidney waste clearance efficiency
Uric AcidM: 3.5–7.2  |  F: 2.6–6.0 mg/dLGout risk, kidney stones
eGFR> 90 mL/min/1.73mΒ²Overall filtration rate β€” key CKD staging
Sodium (Na+)135–145 mEq/LFluid balance regulation
Potassium (K+)3.5–5.0 mEq/LCardiac and muscle function
Chloride (Cl-)96–106 mEq/LAcid-base balance
Calcium8.5–10.5 mg/dLBone health, kidney stone risk
Phosphorus2.5–4.5 mg/dLBone metabolism; elevated in CKD
BUN/Creatinine Ratio10:1 – 20:1Distinguishes pre-renal vs renal causes

Warning Signs of Kidney Problems

⚠️Swelling in feet, ankles, or face
⚠️Reduced urine output or frequent urination at night
⚠️Foamy or blood-tinged urine
⚠️Persistent fatigue and weakness
⚠️Lower back or flank pain
⚠️High blood pressure (uncontrolled)
⚠️Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
⚠️Frequent UTIs (urinary tract infections)

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to fast before a KFT test?+
A 4–8 hour fast is recommended for most accurate results, particularly for creatinine and urea levels. Drink plenty of water before and during the fasting period β€” good hydration is important for kidney function. If combined with blood sugar or lipid tests, a full 10–12 hour fast is needed.
What does high creatinine mean?+
Elevated serum creatinine is one of the earliest and most reliable signs that the kidneys are not filtering blood efficiently. It can indicate acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), dehydration, or excessive protein intake. A single elevated reading should always be confirmed with repeat testing and evaluated by a nephrologist.
Can painkillers damage kidneys?+
Yes. Long-term or excessive use of NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen) is one of the most common causes of drug-induced kidney damage in India. If you take painkillers regularly, annual KFT testing is essential to monitor kidney health.
How often should diabetics get KFT done?+
Diabetics should get KFT (along with urine microalbumin) at least every 6 months, as diabetes is the leading cause of CKD. Hypertensives should also test every 6–12 months. Anyone with known kidney disease should follow their nephrologist's recommended schedule.
Is home sample collection available for KFT?+
Yes, home collection is available for the KFT blood test. We can also arrange simultaneous urine sample collection at home. Call or WhatsApp us at +91-9021491236 to schedule a convenient morning appointment.
